How Menopause Affects Your Body: Signs and Symptoms

Menopause officially begins when a woman hasn't had a menstrual cycle for 12 consecutive months. However, many experience symptoms during perimenopause, which can start in your 40s as reproductive hormones begin to decline.

Common symptoms of perimenopause include:

  • Hot flashes and night sweats
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Mood swings and irritability
  • Vaginal dryness and discomfort during intimacy

These symptoms can vary in intensity and duration. Our providers are here to help you manage them effectively. Your overall comfort and health are our priorities.

What Are the Stages of Menopause?

Menopause occurs in three distinct stages:

  • Perimenopause: The transitional period before menopause when hormone levels start fluctuating, often causing the earliest symptoms.
  • Menopause: Defined by the absence of menstrual periods for one year. Hormone levels decrease, which can bring more noticeable symptoms.
  • Post-Menopause: After menopause, some symptoms may persist; your provider can help you manage long-term health concerns related to menopause, such as bone health.

For most women, menopause will begin around your late 40s or early 50s.

Menopause Care That Meets Your Health Needs

No two women experience menopause in the same way, which is why we personalize your care to your specific needs. Depending on the severity of your symptoms, your provider may recommend Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), which balances hormones to relieve certain symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and mood swings.

If you are unable or uninterested in hormone treatments, our providers can recommend alternative therapies, including lifestyle changes, nutritional counseling, and medications to ease discomfort.

Patient Reviews

Overall patient rating for UWH of Texas:

Annual Well Woman Exam

Dr. Tracey has a great ‘bedside manner’ by the way she is fully engaged, her listening to my concern and showing that she heard me, and her verbalizing each step of the exam. Thank you for your GYN care and kindness. You were especially kind and helpful in letting my husband know that you actually hear me. We both appreciate your bedside manner and service. God bless you and your plans for the future. Wish I used facebook to be able to follow your work.

Gynecological Problem Visit

I wasn’t aware that telehealth or virtual visits were even an option. I went into the office but couldn’t be seen due to a delivery call. That was fine but I wish for a visit like this since I drive so far could have been initiated by phone or video since there was not physical involved. It was an inconvenience driving in the rain, only to not be seen, and drive back in the rain, only to get the telehealth call while driving. Can telehealth and virtual calls be more of an option for follow up visits or none emergency visits due to those driving far. Thank you.
