About Ricardo Munoz, MD
Dr. Ricardo Munoz, Jr is a lifelong resident of San Antonio, TX where he graduated from Antonian College Preparatory in 1972 and then from Incarnate Word College in 1975 where he had a dual major in Biology and Psychology, and minors in Physics and Chemistry. He then graduated from Meharry Medical College in 1979 with a Doctor of Medicine degree.
COL Munoz started his military career in June 1976 and was commissioned a 2nd LT in the Medical Service Corps when he was awarded a US Army Health Profession Scholarship. During that time he did duty at Kenner Army Hospital, Ft. Lee, VA and at Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, TX.
Upon graduation from medical school, he was promoted to CPT in the Medical Corps and started his first year of graduate medical education in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He then served as a Field Surgeon in Camp Humphreys, Korea from 1980 to 1981.
While in Korea, he was instrumental in reducing the STD rate by instituting an educational program to all incoming personnel and also by switching to a new antibiotic protocol. In July 1981 he was reassigned to Brooke Army Medical Center where he entered the Graduate Medical Residency program in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He served as the Chief resident in his fourth year.
In June 1984 he graduated from the program and was then assigned to the 5th General Hospital, Bad Cannstatt, Germany as an Obstetrician and Gynecologist and also as the Chief of Clinics.
His interest in educating the forces led him to establish a prenatal program for expectant parents. He also started the Gynecological laparoscopy program at the hospital. He was promoted to Major in 1985.
He returned to San Antonio and Ft. Sam Houston in 1987 for the AMEDD Officer Advanced Course. After graduation, he was assigned to the Department of Ob/Gyn at Darnall Army Community Hospital, Ft, Hood, TX where he served as the Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. During his time at Darnall, he was responsible for 10 OB-GYN physicians, 4 Nurse Midwives, and 2 Women’s Health Nurse Practitioners. His leadership made for excellent care for the 250 births a month along with educating 4 Family Practice and 2 General Surgery residents in the field of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Dr. Munoz left active duty in 1988 and was then transferred to the 4005th US Army Reserve Hospital. He started a private practice in Copperas Cove TX bringing healthcare to a population that included patients from Copperas Cove, Burnet, Lometa, Goldthwaite, Gatesville, Lampasas, Killeen, and Harker Heights TX.
During his time with the 4005th, he was sent to Panama after Operation Just Cause, to relieve the physicians that had been assigned to Gorgas Army Hospital. Later that same year, in August 1990, he was mobilized for Operation Desert Storm.
In 1992 Dr. Munoz left the Army and returned to private practice in San Antonio. In 1993 he merged his practice with Riverwalk OB-GYN.
After a 16 year break in military service, he joined the Texas Army National Guard in August 2008 where he was assigned to the 36th Combat Aviation Brigade serving as the Battalion Flight Surgeon for the 2-149 GSAB. He completed the Army Flight Surgeon course in 2009.
He was called to duty for Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2010 and served as a Field Surgeon and the Consultant in Gynecology for the region thereby reducing the travel out of country for those patients needing gynecologic care.
In 2012 he was again mobilized and ordered to Kosovo for Operation Joint Guardian where he served as the Deputy Commander for Clinical Services and as the consultant in Obstetrics and Gynecology where he cared for patients from multiple NATO allies.
Upon his return, he was assigned to the Texas Medical Command and assumed the role of Deputy Commander for Clinical Services where he was responsible for the coordination of the healthcare providers and clinics. In Oct, 2013 he assumed the duties of the Commander. In 2016 he was assigned as the TXARNG State Surgeon. He retired from the Army in 2018.
He is the President of Riverwalk OB-GYN. He has served as the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology for North Central Baptist Hospital and the Nix Healthcare System and also as the President of the Medical Staff for the Nix Healthcare System.
Dr. Munoz and his wife, Laura, live in San Antonio, TX. They have 3 children, MAJ Ricardo Munoz and his wife Nikki, Madison and her husband Paul Spinks, and Michael Munoz. He and Laura have 4 grandchildren, Landon, Mila, Olivia and Ricardo.
