What Is Bone Densitometry?
Bone densitometry is a non-invasive imaging test that measures the strength and mineral content of your bones. It is commonly used to assess bone density in the hip, spine, and forearm, areas most vulnerable to fractures caused by osteoporosis.
Unlike a standard X-ray, bone densitometry can detect subtle changes in bone density before a break occurs. This makes it an important part of preventive care, especially for women at higher risk for bone loss.
Why You Might Need a Bone Density Test
Providers use bone densitometry to:
- Diagnose osteoporosis
- Measure fracture risk
- Monitor bone loss over time
- Evaluate the effectiveness of treatment
Women who are postmenopausal, have a family history of osteoporosis, or other risk factors such as low body weight, thyroid disorders, or long-term steroid use may be advised to include this test in their routine preventive care.
What to Expect During the Test
The bone density scan is quick and requires no special preparation. You will lie on a table while a low-dose X-ray scans targeted areas of the body. Most scans take less than 30 minutes. If a scan shows low bone density or osteoporosis, your provider will create a personalized plan. This may include lifestyle changes, supplements, medications, or additional screenings.
