Common Vulvovaginal Conditions

Vulvovaginal issues are common and can occur at any age. Our providers see a variety of conditions, including:

Vulvodynia
Vulvodynia is chronic discomfort or pain around the vulva lasting longer than three months. This pain can make sitting, exercise, or sexual activity difficult. The discomfort may be constant or intermittent. Providers at UWH of Texas carefully evaluate your symptoms, ruling out infections or other causes, and develop a treatment plan designed to relieve pain and improve quality of life.

Vaginitis
Vaginitis is inflammation of the vagina and is a frequent reason women seek care. Symptoms may include itching, burning, abnormal discharge, or odor. Common types of vaginitis include:

  • Yeast infections
  • Bacterial vaginosis
  • Atrophic vaginitis (often linked to menopause)
  • Trichomoniasis

Accurate diagnosis is important to ensure treatment targets the underlying cause and resolves symptoms effectively.

Vaginismus

Vaginismus is a condition in which the muscles around the vagina involuntarily tighten, making penetration during sexual activity, exams, or tampon use painful or impossible. This condition can cause significant discomfort and emotional stress, but it is treatable with the right approach.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs)
STIs such as chlamydia, genital herpes, or HPV can irritate the vulva or vagina, cause ulcers, or lead to discharge. Routine testing, early treatment, and safe sexual practices are key to managing these conditions.

Yeast Infections
Yeast infections, caused by Candida albicans, can cause swelling, itching, burning, painful urination, and changes in vaginal discharge. UWH of Texas providers can confirm the diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment.
